He and his family lived in Pomona City in Franklin Co. Kansas. According to the 1910 Census record, He worked as a merchant doing resale. In the 1920 census record, he worked as an Implementer which is someone who rides the farm tractors with devices on them and operated other machinery that would help with farming, these devices would turn up the soil, to help with harvesting the crops, to separates the produce and such. He knew how to operate these devices and people would hire him to operate these devices for their farm. He may have even sold these items before 1920 when he was a merchant. In 1930 he became a truck driver for a milk company and got his business degree and sold insurance. He became a mason.

Hazel Wanda & Duard Barron
According to the 1930 census records Burton worked as a truck driver in Ozark Township in Anderson Co Kansas. In the 1930s there was the "Great Depression" and the "Dust Bowl" Burton and Hazel was right in the middle of it. There were hardly any jobs, the farms were in ruin due to all the dust storms due to the drought and the lost of the top soil, they couldn't plant anything during that time period. Burton ended up going to California with his brother Roy. He worked in the orange groves in Orange County California at Orange Whole Produce. He work on "New Deal" projects ( New Deal was a program by the federal government to improve infrastructure, build bridges, highways and dams to create jobs) He help build the Prado Dam in Corona Riverside Co California it was completed in 1941.

When Burton was able to make enough money he was able to bring Hazel and the kids to California. I am not too sure exactly when she came to California (I have it down on a note somewhere ) I have them living at in 1947 on Olive Street in Orange and he was still working at Orange Whole Produce. I have him in 1952 working as a machinist for Great Western Cordage until he retired. Hazel worked for Perkins Bakery in 1954. Shortly after she worked for the bakery she was able to get a job at St. Joseph Hospital working as a central supply clerk until she retired.

They moved to Placentia in Orange Co California, and then they moved to Lake Elsinore. They lived in a real nice mobile home and had family gatherings there. Hazel was a fantastic cook; one of her specialties was making divinity candy. (I and another cousin can't seem to make it as well as Hazel could.) She made great pies and cakes. Hazel loved to do needle point and other crafts. Burton loved to make clocks. (I have a backwards clock he made, it all goes backwards) They had a little garden, Hazel loved her roses. She would cut a steam from a rose bush and plant in the ground and place a jar over it and it would grow. (I tried to do this without any luck). Hazel wasn't a very good driver she likes to drive real fast. She had a couple accidents.

John M Barron Sr. ( 1770-?)

Not much is known of John M Barron Sr. He was born in about 1770 in Charles Co. Maryland. I have no idea where died at or when ( others had him dead in Ill.) He married Susan Mattingly. She was born about 1760 St. Mary Co. Maryland. She died 1845 Milan Texas. She was married before being with John, to Joseph Dixon.
This letter I found at Findagrave.com which talks more of the children she had with Joseph Dixon. B.F is Benjamin Franklin Barron, John M Barron Jr. son who is writing to Miles Knowlton Barron his youngest son

Here is a letter A letter from B.F. to his brother, Miles, just months before his death:

John and Susan had three children:
Martha Elizabeth born about 1794. She married Samuel Griffin
Thomas Hudson born 8 Mar 1796 Grayson VA. Hardin Co. KY * Died 24 Feb 1874 Eddy Mclennan Texas. He married Elizabeth Stewart Carnall and Mary Jane Shelton **
John M Jr. born 1800 Pittsylvania VA.

John fought in the Indian war. He was private with the Us Army 16th Regiment. his company commander was Cronwell Pearce. John was 5'8 hazel eyes dark hair age 43. He enlisted 1 Oct 1812 in Philadelphia.
He was reported as missing in action at Stoney Creek June 6, 1812 and was reported as killed M.R Independence, July 24 1814 an American prisoner of war captured at Stoney Creek. Discharged Aug 7 1814. Here is more on the war at Stoney Creek. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Stoney_Creek

John M Barron Sr. Us Army Enlistment, he is located at the bottom of the page.

From my understand from other who have researched the Barron Tree, there is a brick wall as to who John  Barron father is. It is possible he is related to Dr. Hendley & Jessie Barron and believed he is their brother. That their father is Thomas Barron of Charles Co. MD who came from Prince William Co VA.

The name Mattingly goes back to England. The Mattingly's came to the US in 1600s to settle in Maryland in an area called St. Mary St. Mary Co. Maryland. They were Catholic and they migrated to Kentucky due to hardship and wars. They migrated with other families, not too sure if the Barron's were one of the other families or not.

* Back then the lines of the counties and states shifted a bit, what may have been Va back then is now Ky. Keep this mind when you do researching. Things change a lot through out time.
** Thomas had 23 children. I will have a different post on him alone, he accomplished a great deal in his life time.

John M. Barron Jr. (1800- ?)

John M. Barron Jr. was born 1800 in Pittsylvania Co.Virgina. I have no idea when he died. I believe he may have died in Astoria Fulton Co. Ill. between 1860 - 1865 due to he was on the 1860 census record but wasn't on the 1865 one. He married Sally Twidwell on 18 Sept. 1820, according to Hardin Co. Kentucky marriage records. I have found many family trees on Ancestry.com has her listed as Sarah Tweedell, or Sarah Tredwell, she is best known as Sarah, there seems to be many spelling to her last name. She was born 1802 in Pittsylvania Co. Virgina. She died 11 Apr 1880 in Astoria Fulton Co. Ill.

The census records before 1850  isn't too easy to read due to they don't have the relatives names on them, just head of household and boxes where there is slash marks of the age groups. This means you have to figure out who is who according to age.

I found a federal census record for 1840 for Astoria Fulton Co. Illinois This was real hard for me to figure out who is who due to Barron's was a very big family. This is the best I can figure out with this census record.
This is how it reads out (I am using X's to mark the blank spaces) The census goes males first.
2 2 2 1 X X 1 X X X X X X X 2 1 X X 1
John being 40 yrs old, Sarah being 38 yrs old. There is one slash mark for 15-20 age group, Joseph would have been 17 yrs old. There is 2 slash marks for the age group of 10-15 I am guessing this would Benjamin and Matthew age 15 & 13. There is 2 slashes for females of the age group of 10-15 I am guessing this to be Sarah and Mary 12 & 11. There is 2 slash marks for males 5-10 I am guessing John to be 10 yrs old. I have no idea who the other male child would be. Susan 9 yrs old. (don't see her marked down, could have been marked as a male rather than female mistakes are known to happen) There is 2 slash marks for under 5, I am guessing that it was Jenkins who would have been 5yrs old and Thomas T. being a year old. I count those who lived past 20 yrs old, not the ones who doesn't have a death date to them. Like Thomas who was born in 1921 (since there is 2 Thomas's I think the one that was born in 1839 replaced the other one by name, due to when one dies, there is another who has the same name) I think John may have lived longer than 1840, he seemed to fit the age group when the census was taken. Pasty I don't have a death date for her; she may have died very young. Same goes with Anthony.

I haven't found a 1850 Federal census record for the family yet.

I came across an 1855 Astoria Fulton Co. Illinois census record; there is a John Barron on it. There is one male child under the age of 10. I would guess this to be of Miles at the age of 7. There is 3 male children between the ages of 10-20 I would guess them to be David age 11, Thomas age 16 and Jenkins age 19. There is one male at the age of 50-60, I take it to be John around the age of 55 yrs. There is one female around the age of 50-60 I think this is Sarah around the age of 53.

I found them on the 1860 federal census record, if you look at the record on ancestry.com the photo of it is so bad, you really cant tell who is on it. According to it John was 60 yrs old, born in Virginia and was a farmer with real estate value of 1500 and personal value at 75. Sarah was 57 yrs. old born in Virginia. They had a son name David living with them he was 15 yrs old and was born 1845 in Ill. and another son name Miles age 12 born 1848 in Ill.  Also there was John and Sarah daughter (Susan Barron born 1831 in Fulton Ill. died  in Ill.) family living with them her husband Jeremiah Bryant 34 yrs old, son Samuel J 5 yrs old, another son John J 3 yrs old and a daughter Sarah E. 1 yr old. ( I am not too sure what happen to Susan, she may have passed away)

According to the 1870 census record, Sarah was living with the Falkensteins at the age of 68. I have no idea what is the relationship is between her and them. John W.H Ludlum age 17 is living with them also which he is the son of John Quincy Ludlum (The Ludlum's * and Barron's are close to each other, there is a couple marriages between the two families) and is a neighbor of the Falkenstein's. Along with David Barron ( son of Sarah and John) who lived a couple doors down from them. When I find the connection between the families I will be posting it on here.

They enlisted in Astoria Ill.

* The Ludlum Family has been neighbors with the Barron's in Ill. There are at least 3 marriages between the Barron's and Ludlum's. Mary Polly Barron to John Quincy Ludlum, William Harrison Barron married to Sarah Ann Ludlum, Hattie Ward married John Taylor Barron who was the daughter of Versilla Ludlum *

** At first we thought John was John McHenry, but I am not too sure. I need to double check this, there is a John McHenry born in KY on the eastern side of the state that lived and died in Colorado **

*** The names and date of the children came from other family trees on ancestry.com, Anthony and William being born in KY while the ones before where born in Ill, doesn't make much sense to me, don't know if these are really the true locations of they were born at. It seems odd to me unless Sarah came back to KY and was living there during that time period. Or others may have the wrong information on their tree. Will have to research this out more.***

Here is a an interesting tid bid Abe Lincoln was born in Hardin Co. KY he was there 2 yrs before the Barron's were there.

Joseph Barron (1823- ?)

Joseph Barron has become my first brick wall in family tree research.  This man has been a mystery to me since I first started in researching him, I have struggled with him. I also found out that I wasn't the only one who has struggled with him. I found that Garmon and Wanda Estes had a problem with him. I made it my mission to get pass this brick wall.

When I first started with him all I had was a name and a date when he was born and his wife name. I went on ancestry.com and started going into census records, started with John Taylor his son since I was able to find so easily. In 1860 Joseph and John Lived in Lamoine McDonough Co. Ill. Joseph was 37 yrs old a Cooper Labor he had personal estate value at 120 stated he was born in Indiana. His wife Martha (Mertha) was 31 yr old and was born in NC. Martha Maiden name is Kennedy on that census there is a John Kennedy that was 55 yrs old from NC a Mery (Mary) 38 yrs old born in Ill. Laura 21 yr old born in Ill and a William 19 yrs old born in Ill. ( I believe that these are Martha family).  Joesph and Martha had 2 children on the census John Taylor at 10 yrs old and Thomas E. at 8 yrs old. They were married 10 Jun 1847 in McDonough Co. according to LDS ( they have him named as Joseph Barrow)

I continue my search going to the 1870 in the same location and found Joseph again, this time he is 47 yrs old a farm labor still saying he is born in Ind. His wife Martha 41 yrs old, by this time John became a blacksmith at 20 yrs old and Thomas is 18 yrs old and they now have a sister name Mary A. 8 yrs old.

I continue on to the 1880 census records, this time I couldn't find them in Ill. But I did find them in White Mound Jewell Co. Kansas. Joseph is now 57 yrs old and a wagon maker and he had Neuralgia ( sever pain, similar to real bad headaches) he still stated he was born in Ind. and that his father was born in KY and his mother too.  Martha 54 yrs old and her parents were born in NC.  I also looked for There son Thomas and I found him in the same town,  he was 29 yrs old a wagon maker stating that his father was born in Ind and mother in NC. He had a wife name Mealissa J. ( Melissa) 30 yrs old born in Ill. Father and mother born in VA. they had a daughter name Cora D. 6 yrs old born in Ill. a son Edward D 3 yrs old born in Ill another daughter 4 months old born in Jan in Kansas and a sister in law name Sarah M. Parks 24 yrs old who was a school teacher born in Ill. I would est. that they ( Joseph and his children ) came to Kansas between 1877 and Jan 1880. Due to the children ages. I also would say that Joseph came to Kansas around the same time and I think Joseph and Thomas worked together making wagons. I have no idea what happen to Mary. ( she may have passed away or have gotten married)

I continue on with my search to 1885 Kansas state census, this time I found him in Salem Allen Co. Kansas. 61 yrs old farmer. This census had his civil war information. He got a honorable discharge, he enlisted in Ohio in company H regiment 39, infantry. Martha was 55 yrs.

Then I lost them, the 1990 census were burned up in a major fire so that was a dead end. I tried the 1900s and nothing. I kept looking in Ancestry.com through their records.I did find a California Voter Register On Nov 4th 1877 he was on it as  miner in New River age 54. There was another Barron ( John M) born in KY a blacksmith Apr 2 1877 I am not too sure if he is related or not ( will have to research him out).  From this record I believe he was in California trying to strike it rich with the gold rush. The family might have traveled to California and then came to Kansas on there way back to Ill. or back to Kansas if they came earlier than 1877. To be close to family.

When I was researching Joseph here was my problem I couldn't find his parents. At first I though he might be the same Barron as Joseph Barron the famous Indian interpreter from Canada that lived in Ind. but I search out his tree and found no Joseph with the same or similar birth year that was married to a Martha and had a some name John Taylor. The census records pointed out that he was born in Indiana, but I couldn't find any Joseph born there that fit his age. I recalled on the 1880 census that said his father was born in KY, I started searching that direction. I was able to find a John M. Barron who had a son name Joseph who was born the same yr as our Joseph and stated he was born in KY, The Kentucky Barron's moved from KY to Ill. Fulton Co. in 1830 which was the next county over from McDonough Co.  I was able to get a a hold of a couple Barron's from that family group and they said our Joseph is their Joseph that the dates match up to what they had of him. At times I still debated whether it be true or not, but I kept reminding myself of the dates and how they weren't matching up to the other Barron's.

The beginning of this past summer my cousin David gave me some family tree goodies that was passed onto him from uncle Garmon. I was looking through it and I was reading his research on Joseph, and this was a big help for me, he talked about how he found Joseph in Ill. and struggled with it. Lafayette Barron told Garmon that Joseph had a cousin name Miles Barron. I found out later that Miles is ( Miles Knowlton Barron ) is the youngest of 17 children and Joseph Barron is his second oldest brother. Miles was born in Ill. and Joseph was born in Ky. He did live in Coffeyville Kansas and John Taylor Barron would go visit relatives there according to the newspaper, which I believe is Miles family. I was looking at a death cert. of John Taylor Barron and it stated that his father was born in KY.

I strongly believe that Joseph is the son of John M Barron who was born abt. 1800 Pittsylvania Co. Virginia and married  in 18 Sept 1820 in Hardin Co. KY to his mother is is Sarah Tweedell born 1802 in Pittsylvania Co. Virginia.  She died 11 Apr 1880 Virginia. ( I believe that some of her relatives lived in McDonough Ill. and that is why Joseph was there in the first place) John M. Parents are John M Barron Sr. born abt 1770 in Charles Co. Maryland and Susan Mattingly born abt 1760 St. Marys Co Maryland. Died 1845 Milam Texas.

Now Joseph and Martha is still a mystery as to where they have died at, I have no idea where they are buried at. I believe they are somewhere in Allen Co. Kansas.  I am hoping to find someone who can help me with this. I would be great to find his tombstone and get a date of his and Martha death. I saw in the Iola Newspaper on 16 Apr 1886 that old Barron is dying from typhoid fever I have no idea if this is Joseph or not.
